Basketball is a high paced dynamic sport in which an athlete has to dribble a ball in order to move where they need to go on the court. In today's game it is important for players to have mastered the ability to dribble under pressure and it is a necessary skill for every position on the team.    For that reason, it is important for a basketball player to be confident in his/her control of the ball.  It is a proven fact, athletes need to train at the highest level of intensity to perform with confidence in the game under the bright lights.  An athlete starts to hear early in their career phrases such as "practice makes perfect" or "practice should be harder than the game," these statements are both true.  Therein lies the age old question how can a player get the same intensity of the game in practice on their own?  The answer to that question over the past 20 years has been to hire a trainer and they will put you through drills and give you feedback to improve your game. This is a very effective way to improve and gain confidence in different areas of the game.  If a player relies totally on a trainer for all the answers and doesn’t spend time on their own working to master the skills, then true confidence is not gained.  There are a few problems with working without a coach. How can practice on my own be measured?  How can it hold a player accountable to work as intense as the game? How can a player get immediate feedback if they are doing it incorrectly?

The solution to the problem is called the dribble stick training, a basketball training system that combines technology of a phone app with a state of art training device. The device holds the player accountable to make every repetition as intense as possible. The phone application has workouts and ongoing training that keeps the player engaged. Coaches and trainers are now able to track what their players are doing on their own to stay sharp in the games.

This is a proven system with more than eight years of research and proof of concept completed. Now the time has come to make a plan to spread the word with how helpful this tool can really be. Our first area area of focus will be a social media campaign, using all social media platforms to promote this basketball training system.  The next step would be to produce video commercials to help drive the brand and begin to build excitement.  The third step is to build a training video library for the workouts to be sure it stays fresh and relevant to today's game.

It is our goal to be where players, coaches and trainers turn to, to help them improve their control of the ball and be confident on the court.  To encourage players to work on their craft on their own with the proper feedback to be sure they are doing things properly. To develop a community for basketball players to be able to come to work on their games and share with others.

My issue as a basketball trainer is being creative in teaching the fundamentals of the game to basketball players of all ages. Keeping a player involved in practice and hungry to learn ways to improve their skill sets is important to their development as an athlete. The problem is that in the last 50 years the only aid and equipment available have been cones and chairs, which do not provide enough of a challenge for the players to test their game.

There lies the opportunity in coming up with a basketball training device that can help structure a player’s individual workouts as well as the team practice. A tool that is dynamic enough to teach players while they practice; giving them feedback when they do it improperly. I have invented just that tool and for the past eight years have been using the tool to teach players the proper way to dribble.

When creating a marketing plan for this tool I had to ask myself who is my audience? At a glance, the audience for this tool would seem to be the would be the players themselves. As as I consider it further, it could be the parents of the players because they are the ones that would be the purchasing them. However, it could also be the coaches or trainers as they are the ones always looking for an edge to help their players compete at a higher level. This is still a difficult one for me to answer as I do not yet know which would be the better target audience or could it perhaps be all three?

The object of the Dribble Stick Training System is to propose and build awareness that there are better ways to practice and work on your basketball game. The research I have done is mostly on the proof of concept, does the product work and do they like to use it. In the eight years, we have worked with thousands of players of all ages around the world and have come to the conclusion that it does work. The next step for me is is to find the best way to let people know about it and get them to replace the dated cones and chairs with the Dribble Stick Training System.
